Lighting Layouts: Why Pot Lights Aren't Enough
I walk into so many renovations and look up to see a grid of 6-inch recessed cans (pot lights) blasting 3000 lumens of flat, harsh light onto the floor. It looks like an operating room, not a living room.
The Three Layers of Light
1. Ambient: This is your general fill light. Yes, pot lights work here, but put them on dimmers! And please, stop using the massive 6-inch ones. 3-inch or 4-inch apertures are much cleaner.
2. Task: This is light for doing work. Under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen is non-negotiable. Pendants over the island. Reading lamps by the sofa. This light needs to be bright and focused.
3. Accent: This is the drama. Picture lights over art. Wall sconces for a soft glow. LED tape light in the toe-kick of the vanity. This creates depth and mood.
The Kelvin Temperature Mistake
Don't mix your color temperatures! If your pot lights are 4000K (cool blue) and your lamps are 2700K (warm yellow), your room will look subconscious and messy. Stick to 3000K for a modern, clean look, or 2700K for a traditional, cozy vibe. But keep it consistent.
Designer Tip: Use wall sconces. They provide eye-level lighting that is flattering for faces (unlike overhead lights which create dark shadows under your eyes).
