The Cabinet Conundrum: Custom vs. Semi-Custom vs. Stock
Cabinets are usually the single most expensive item in a kitchen remodel. But price tags can range from $5,000 to $50,000 for the same size kitchen. What are you actually paying for?
Stock Cabinets (The "Big Box" Store)
These come in 3-inch increments (12", 15", 18", etc.). You can't change the size. If your wall is 50 inches, you put in a 48-inch cabinet and use a 2-inch "filler" strip. Materials are often particleboard boxes with laminate fronts.
Verdict: Good for flips or rental properties. Not for your forever home.
Semi-Custom (The Sweet Spot)
These are built to order, but from a catalog of modifications. You can change the depth, add roll-out trays, or combine finishes. The construction is usually plywood boxes with solid wood doors. You can get 90% of the "custom" look for 60% of the price.
Verdict: The best value for most homeowners.
Custom (The Sky is the Limit)
Made by a local shop. Any width, any height, any paint color. They can build around that weird pipe in the corner perfectly. The quality is heirloom—dovetail drawers, 3/4" plywood everywhere.
Verdict: Necessary for historic homes with weird angles, or if you want a very specific wood species or finish. Otherwise, overkill for the budget.
